Help

Quick answers for common questions at the yard, on site and at the saw.

Free
Cut calculator, cut lists, saved projects, reusable yards, exports and share links. No 3D designer or AI access.
Pro
Adds browser 3D design, GLB import and AI-assisted design with a monthly AI-unit allowance.

Cut calculator Free

Open the calculator
Do I need an account to use the calculator?
No. You can open the timber calculator as a guest, enter stock and parts, and calculate cut plans immediately. An account is only required when you want to save projects, manage yards, or create share links.
What happens to my work if I am not signed in?
Guest projects are stored in your browser’s local storage on this device. Clearing site data or switching browsers will remove them. Use Save and sign in to keep projects on your account.
How do I add store lengths?
Each stock row is a cross-section and a sold length in your chosen unit system, with an optional price per metre. Type lengths manually or copy them from a yard into your project.
What is the difference between fixed and joinable parts?
Fixed parts have a specific length and quantity — each piece is cut to size. Joinable parts represent a total length you will assemble from one or more cuts (for example, a long run of skirting). Leftovers longer than the optional minimum piece length can count toward that total.
What are kerf and end trim?
Kerf is the blade width removed on each cut. End trim is waste taken from each end of a board before you start cutting. Both apply across the whole project.
What do the plan options mean?
Cheapest minimises material cost where prices are entered. Least scrap reduces leftover length. Fewest boards uses as few stock lengths as possible. Fewest locations (mixed stock only) prefers plans that buy from fewer yards, even if another plan is slightly cheaper. The solver runs in your browser.
Why does a per-yard tab show errors?
That yard’s stock alone cannot satisfy every part in the project. Either add stock from that yard, remove parts that need sizes it does not sell, or use the Mixed scope to combine yards.

Units Free

Open settings
What units does Sawplan use?
Choose metric or imperial in Settings. Dimensions and exports follow that preference; Sawplan stores lengths precisely internally. Kerf and end trim are displayed in the relevant small unit (millimetres or inches).

Yards and stock Free

Open yards
What are yards?
A yard is a named catalog of store lengths — your local timber merchant, a chain store, or a mill price list. Copy SKUs into a project when you plan a job.
Does changing a yard change my saved projects?
No. The project keeps a snapshot of the copied rows; later edits to the yard do not alter saved projects. Prices are estimates based on the data you entered.

3D design Pro

Open 3D design
What does a saved project keep?
A saved project keeps its 3D design, imported model, stock lengths, parts, cut lists and yard snapshots together. Open Design to add individual members or a ready-made assembly such as a wall, roof or stairs.
Can I edit an assembly after inserting it?
Yes. Select an assembly in the Members list to inspect it, then change its available template parameters. A wall’s length and stud spacing, for example, determine how many studs are generated. If you manually edited generated pieces, Sawplan asks you to review regeneration first so those changes are not silently lost.

Model import Pro

Import a GLB model
What can I import?
The model-import workflow supports GLB files. Review the timber pieces Sawplan identifies and confirm their dimensions before creating a cut list.

AI design Pro

Open AI design
What can AI design do?
The AI panel can create or change supported timber templates and keeps the conversation with the project. You can alternate between AI and manual editing. When a request is ambiguous, give the missing detail or choose a suggested answer.
Is AI usage unlimited?
No. Pro includes a monthly AI-unit allowance and a daily cap, and unit costs vary by action. Pro accounts see their current usage in the app under Settings → Billing.
Does Sawplan check whether my design is safe to build?
No. AI output is planning geometry, not a code approval or engineering calculation. Confirm dimensions, material choices, connections and local rules before construction.

Exports and sharing Free

Open your projects
What is included in an export?
Each board shows labelled cuts, trim, kerf and leftover length, and the shopping list groups stock by yard when relevant. Print or export PDF, spreadsheet, PNG or project data, and choose the cut list, 3D model, or both when available. A model PDF includes a perspective view and an exploded labelled view.
Can I share a plan with someone who does not have an account?
Yes. On a saved project, open Share to create an unlisted link. Anyone with the link can view the selected content read-only, and you choose whether the 3D model is visible. Revoke the link at any time from the same dialog.

Why do I need to verify my email?
Saving projects and opening Pro tools require a verified account. If the verification link expired, sign in and request a new one from the app.
I forgot my password.
Use Forgot password on the app sign-in page. We never ask for your password by email or through the contact form.
Can I sign in with Google or Facebook?
Yes, when the option is shown on the sign-in page. Sawplan receives only your provider account ID, name and email address. A new account created this way confirms its email once before saving work. If an account already uses that email, sign in with your password first and connect the provider under Settings → Security; Sawplan never joins accounts just because the email matches.
My account was created with Google or Facebook. How do I add a password?
Use Forgot password with your account email; the emailed link lets you choose a password. After that you can sign in either way, and you can connect or disconnect providers in Settings → Security as long as one sign-in method remains.
How do I delete my account?
Follow the data deletion instructions on our website: email us from your account address and we will delete your account, projects, yards and linked sign-ins.
Does Sawplan handle plywood, MDF sheets or CNC nesting?
No. Sawplan is built for linear timber — lengths you buy by the metre and cut along the grain. Sheet goods and 2D nesting are out of scope.
